"Without music, life would be a blank to me." - Jane Austen

Julio Caballero Perez

Julio Caballero is a dedicated and curious musician, recognised among the most interesting harpsichordists of his generation. From a young age, he developed a deep interest in the inner workings of music and began studying harmony and composition at the age of 12. Over time, he was drawn to early music for its interpretative freedom and its natural connection with improvisation and composition, eventually deciding to specialise in this field. At 18, he moved to Switzerland to study with Dirk Börner and Michael Form at the Bern University of the Arts. He later continued his education at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, where he studied primarily with Francesco Corti and also received guidance from Andrea Scherer, Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, and others. During his studies, he began performing with ensembles such as Les Musiciens du Louvre, Il Pomo d’Oro, B’Rock, Abchordis, and La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra. Around this time, he co-founded El Gran Teatro del Mundo, a creative workshop for experimentation and artistic development. Today, directing the group is his main focus, involving in-depth research into historical repertoire and its cultural context. While the ensemble specialises in French Baroque music, its programmes range from 17th-century German works to Classical-era repertoire. Since its founding in 2016, it has performed at prestigious venues and festivals across Europe. Their debut recording received a Diapason d’Or, and their second, La vida es sueño, was awarded the Choc prize by Classica magazine.
